WHY A ZINE?
I've always loved magazines.
There's something special about holding a collection of stories, artwork, photography, and design that all revolve around a single idea. As someone who enjoys writing, graphic design, and visual storytelling, I've often dreamed about creating one of my own. If I hadn't gone down the nutrition/health sciences path, I think I would have gone into editorial design.
The problem is that magazines are usually the work of an entire team. Writers, editors, photographers, designers, illustrators, printers, advertisers...they're built by dozens of people over weeks or months. As much as I loved the idea, it never felt realistic for one person.
Then I discovered zines.
A zine is, at its heart, a miniature magazine. There are no rules. They can be polished or rough, serious or silly, six pages or sixty. They exist because someone had an idea in their head and then simply made it real. Anyone can make a zine on any topic. They are rebellious.
SOLID STATE grew out of that realization. It's a project where my love of editorial design, creative writing, illustration, and video games all intersect. Each month, I plan to release a new issue centered around a single game that left a lasting impression on me.
These aren't reviews, buying guides, or lists of the "greatest games of all time." They're personal essays about atmosphere, world-building, and the strange ways that video games shape the way we think, feel, and remember.
Each issue is a small love letter to a game that left a mark. I hope you'll find one that left a mark on you, too.
